The final was played in horrible wet conditions but that did not excuse the horrible handling and defensive errors that cost South Africa the title in Sydney. Fiji the winners with 12-10 giving them just reward for handling the weather better than South Africa.

A horrible error by the Blitzbokke with the first kickoff gave Fiji an early 7-0 lead. Although the Blitzbokke hit back almost immediately another horrible mistake in defence gave Fiji a 12-5 lead at the halftime break.

A knock-on by the Blitzbokke after normal time was up a true reflection of their performance in the final.
